Time to Celebrate All Things Irish

3/17/2016

Picture
March is Irish-American Heritage Month

With over 34 million Americans claiming Irish ancestry, chances are you have reason to celebrate.  Even if you have no Irish blood flowing through your veins, join in the fun.

Did you know?
  •  9 signatories of the Declaration of Independence were Irish.
  • 253 Irish-born men have received the Medal of Honor.
  •  20+ US presidents claim Irish ancestry - including Barack Obama
  • Irish-American Kathryn Dwyer Sullivan was the first woman from the U.S. to walk in space

Get in the spirit - Read one of these classics by Irish authors

Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift (1726)
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde  (1890)
Dracula by Bram Stoker (1897)
Ulysses by James Joyce (1926)
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe  by C. S. Lewis  (1950)
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (1996)

Or maybe one that you're not as familiar with
Picture
Tristram Shandy
by Laurence Sterne (1760)
"The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman" humorously chronicles the life of Tristram Shandy. It was made into a movie in 2005 with Steve Coogan, Jeremy Northam and Gillian Anderson

Picture
The Last September
 by Elizabeth Bowen (1929)
A portrait of a young woman's coming of age in a 1920 country house of Anglo-Irish aristocrats as the British rule in Southern Ireland comes to an end.  Also a movie with Maggie Smith, think Downton Abbey gone Irish.

Picture
At Swim-Two-Birds
by Flann O'Brien (1939)
A wildly comic send-up of Irish literature and culture.

Picture
Room
by Emma Donoghue (2010)
The story is told from the perspective of a five year old boy, Jack who is being held captive in a small room along with his mother.  This one too has been made into a movie which has been getting major buzz for Brae Larson who just received the Best Actress award for her portrayal of the mom.
